01 — Origin

The phrase that wouldn't leave.

buff curl began not with a brief, but with a loop — two words that kept returning until they demanded a reason to exist.

The beginning
A name before a product.
The words "buff curl" started looping after I finally cracked a routine for my curls and began to enjoy them. I tried to ignore the phrase. It kept coming back. One day I asked — what are you asking of me? The answer: make something for hair exactly like mine. Fine, thin curls, a dry, touchy scalp, and a body that loves a daily workout.
The daily dilemma
Choosing between healthy curls or a healthy scalp.
Workout — scalp gets sweaty, itchy. Wash — curls look great again but my scalp loses natural oils and flakes. Skip wash and reach for dry shampoo — white dust, crunchy curls, clogged follicles. It felt like choosing between the two, never having both.
The $5 mousse moment
An accidental prototype.
I bought a $5 Pantene styling mousse on impulse. Magic: my Day-2 curls were soft, bouncy, zero crunch. Finally, a refresh product — yet it did nothing for sweat or scalp health. That gap was everything.
Aha → Product Concept
The concept
What if that mousse also cleaned my scalp?
Micellar foam that lifts sweat and oil while keeping curls soft. One step. No white cast. No stiffness. buff curl was born — not from a gap in the market, but from a gap in my own morning routine.
02 — Colour Exploration

Finding the palette.

November through December 2024 — brainstorming colour palettes, testing fonts, building and discarding brand identities. Three rounds before the right answer arrived.

Round 01 — Peach + Teal
Peach #FFBB9B
Salmon #F99070
Deep Teal #0E8080
Forest Teal #006060
Warm and soft — but felt too generic for an active product. Lacked energy.
Round 02 — Lime + Olive
Electric Lime #B5D400
Lime Mid #9AB800
Olive #8A8500
Dark Olive #6B6800
High energy but wrong emotion — read as sporty supplement brand, not scalp-safe curl care.
Round 03 — Sky + Lavender
Sky Blue #99D4E8
Mid Sky #70B8D4
Lavender #C48FD4
Deep Lav #A870C0
Closer — the sky read as clean and water-adjacent. But the lavender felt cosmetic without the energy the brand needed.
Final — Ocean Blue · Coral · Gold gradient logotype
Deep Ocean #1A5276
Sky Blue #2E86C1
Light Sky #5DADE2
Coral #E8552A
Gold #F5A623
Pink #E91E8C
✓ Chosen. Ocean blue carries clean water energy, scalp-safe trust, and athletic coolness. The coral-to-gold logotype gradient adds warmth and personality — the foam, the movement, the glow of a post-workout refresh.
03 — Label Development

Building the product label.

May 2025 onward — solidifying brand identity, building the product label, applying it to the mockup. Four stages from rough to final.

buff curl
early concept
Stage 01 — Lime/Teal concept
First iteration of the label using the lime-olive palette. Bold but tonally wrong for a scalp-care product.
buff curl
Reset Rinse
Stage 02 — Sky/Lavender concept
Applied the sky-lavender palette to the label. Cleaner and more trusted — but still missing the energy of the brand voice.
buff curl
Reset Rinse
Daily Scalp Refresher Foam
Stage 03 — Final label system
Ocean blue ground, wave motif at the base, coral-to-gold gradient logotype. The wave references both water and the movement of foam through hair.
Applied to
product mockup
8 fl oz
Stage 04 — Applied to mockup
Finalized label mapped onto the pump bottle mockup. Aloe & Panthenol Hydration · Light Foam Formula · No Buildup · pH-Balanced.
04 — Design Principles

Five principles
built into the formula.

Every visual and formula decision traces back to one of these five commitments.

Dual-Action
Curl definition + scalp cleanse
One product that does both — never a compromise between healthy hair and healthy scalp.
Sensitive-Scalp Safe
pH 4.5–5.5
Aloe, panthenol, prebiotics — formulated for psoriasis-prone and reactive scalps. No exceptions.
Zero Residue
No white cast
Micellar surfactants leave nothing behind — safe for dark curls, safe for daily use, always invisible.
Clean + Vegan
Plant-powered performance
No parabens, sulfates, or silicones. Cruelty-free throughout the supply chain.
Day-2 Charm
Curls evolve, not deteriorate
Built for the in-between days — curls should be better on Day 2 than they were on wash day.
05 — Unique Selling Points

What makes it different.

Five things buff curl does that no existing product does in combination.

06 — What's Next

The prototype is live.
The work continues.

Three active tracks in development as of 2026.

👥
User Testing
Recruiting curly athletes for beta feedback — testing the formula on fine, medium, and coarse curl types across different workout intensities.
🧴
Variant Mapping
Fine curls, medium curls, coarse curls — each requires a different micellar concentration and hold level. Mapping the product line across curl types.
🌱
Sustainability Check
PCR (post-consumer recycled) bottle sourcing. Low-foam rinse lab tests to minimize water usage. Packaging designed to be refillable long-term.
"buff curl exists because I refused to choose between the gym and good hair days."

It's the product I needed and couldn't find. So I made it — and documented every step of the way.
